Sue Gilbert

Sue Gilbert was raised on Greenaway Island, her family’s private estate on the Connecticut shore. Although in many ways she and her five siblings led an idyllic existence in the lap of wealth and privilege, Ms. Gilbert came of age in the sixties, questioning the values that her parents and their upper class generation had always taken for granted.

After graduating from Mills College in the early seventies, Ms. Gilbert studied advertising and film at Art Center College of Design, working in Los Angeles afterwards on TV commercials, corporate films and ABC After School Specials.

Behind the Scenes

In 1982 Ms. Gilbert directed her award-winning documentary, Greenaway, a portrait of her wealthy parents and their lifestyle. Greenaway was exhibited at numerous festivals worldwide and aired on PBS and in Europe. Subsequently she produced and directed several short films, also exhibited internationally. She retired in 1985 to raise a family.

After screening Greenaway for an audience of Seattle filmmakers in 2007, Ms. Gilbert was inspired by the group’s enthusiasm and their many questions. She invited her siblings and their adult children to participate in filming a sequel to explore the legacy of their wealth through three generations. Beyond Greenaway: The Legacy is the result. Released in 2009, the award-winning documentary has been exhibited at numerous festivals in the U.S. and abroad.
